Crainio wins grant from Innovate UK Biomedical Catalyst programme

November 2023. Crainio, the leading non-invasive intracranial pressure (ICP) measurement company, has received a significant grant from the Innovate UK Biomedical Catalyst programme for the further development of its non-invasive ICP technology.

The £500K grant, awarded to Crainio in collaboration with City, University of London and Barts NHS Trust, will enable a clinical feasibility study to be conducted at the Royal London Hospital. Using a redesigned and improved sensor that is temporarily attached to the patient’s forehead, and along with advanced data science work, the project will achieve standard of care levels of accuracy for the technology.

Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) is the leading cause of death for adults under 40. Intracranial pressure is the key physiological indicator that helps clinicians diagnose and manage TBI. Currently, ICP can only be directly measured through the use invasive probe inserted into the patient’s head through a hole drilled in their skull. Crainio’s technology enables this vital sign to be measured noninvasively, providing enables simple, quick, risk free non-invasive intracranial pressure measurement.

Crainio CEO, Jeremy Holland, says “Crainio’s technology will enable easy measurement of intracranial pressure, and thus severity of brain injury, nearer to the source of that injury – guiding appropriate clinical intervention in the precious ‘golden hours’ after an accident. The Biomedical Catalyst grant will ensure that the technology delivers the accuracy and reliability needed by clinicians”.

The Biomedical Catalyst is highly competitive, with only a small percentage of applicants receiving funding. Securing this grant is a fantastic achievement for the Crainio team.

Jeremy adds “This project will enable us to continue building on Crainio’s success to date and to demonstrate standard of care level accuracy. Following completion of the study Crainio plans to release this revolutionary product to the market in 2026. This grant is instrumental to us achieving that goal.
